Rising from a volcanic tufa cliff above the valley, Orvieto is one of Italy's great medieval surprises. A striped Gothic cathedral, a labyrinth of Etruscan tunnels beneath the streets and the best white wine in the region. A full day — or the first half of a longer journey north.
